At about 1:30 p.m. on Friday, an unidentified group hurled bricks at the Shree Swaminarayan Vadtal Dham Hindu temple in Richmond Heights, Ohio. The stones smashed multiple panes of glass and left noticeable damage inside the sanctuary while priests and worshippers were present.
Law Enforcement and Federal Partners Examine the Incident
Police are scrutinizing the temple’s security footage to reconstruct the attack and identify the culprits. The Hindu American Foundation (HAF) confirmed that the video has been turned over to investigators and that the case has also been forwarded to the FBI and civil‑rights authorities.
To date, no suspect has been publicly named and no arrests have been announced.
Community Leaders Urge an Expedited, Open Investigation
National Hindu bodies such as the Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA) have called on authorities to act quickly, hold perpetrators accountable, and issue a public condemnation of the assault. CoHNA specifically appealed to Richmond Heights Mayor Kim Thomas and other local officials to denounce the act and reassure the Hindu community of its safety.
Although some observers suspect a hate‑based motive, law‑enforcement agencies have not confirmed bias as a factor.
No Injuries Reported Among Worshippers
Despite the chaos, no one was physically harmed. The primary damage consists of broken windows and other property impairment, which temple staff continue to inventory.
HAF has urged officials to locate those responsible and to issue a strong public statement against any rhetoric that threatens Hindu or Indian‑American communities.
Historical Vandalism of Hindu Temples Cited
CoHNA referenced earlier incidents of vandalism targeting Hindu temples in New York and California, noting that each case unfolded under different circumstances. While these events raise concerns, they remain separate investigations and do not alone indicate a nationwide trend.
The Richmond Heights case remains active as investigators analyze video evidence and other leads to determine whether religious bias played a role.
