Congress Announces Its Line‑up for the Upcoming Maharashtra Council Elections
The party has put forward three names for the biennial polls to the Maharashtra Legislative Council. Two seasoned members are seeking another term, and a fresh face has been added for the Amravati Teachers’ seat.
Returning Incumbents and a First‑Time Challenger
Abhijit Wanjari will contest the Nagpur Division Graduates’ constituency once more, while Jayant Dinkar Asagaonkar is set to defend the Pune Division Teachers’ seat. Both currently sit in the council and their mandates run out in December 2026.
Joining them is Aditi Pohare, who will vie for the Amravati Division Teachers’ constituency — marking her debut in a council race.
Five Seats Up for Grabs
The schedule covers five constituencies: three Graduates’ seats (Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Pune, Nagpur) and two Teachers’ seats (Amravati, Pune). All sitting members’ terms conclude on 6 December 2026.
Important Election Milestones
- Nomination deadline: 6 October
- Scrutiny of nominations: 7 October
- Withdrawal cut‑off: 9 October
- Polling day: 23 October

Coordination Within the MVA Alliance
The announcements arrive as the Maha Vikas Aghadi – comprising Congress, NCP (Sharad Pawar) and Shiv Sena (UBT) – continues internal negotiations on seat‑sharing for the council elections. While each partner releases its own slate, the alliance has vowed to harmonise its approach ahead of the October vote.
As the nomination window narrows, the contest for the five council seats is expected to sharpen, setting the stage for a tightly watched battle.
